07 Collaborative mapping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A popular method to en\u00adgage stakeholders in urban planning and design and to develop a better under\u00adstand\u00ading of the different types of acti\u00advi\u00adties encoun\u00adtered in the public space. The aim is to facilitate the spatiali\u00adsation of users\u2019 mobility flows and set the con\u00additi\u00adons for identifying poss\u00adible con\u00adflicts in the public space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Select the most suitable format<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Syncity tested three versions of collaborative mapping:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 traditional (single use printed maps and hand drawing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 whiteboard (map printed on an erasable whiteboard and hand drawing with special markers)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 online (digital drawing on a static map using an open-source programme\u2009\u2013\u2009AWW APP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional and whiteboard versions are well suited for groups of 6\u2009\u2013\u20098 people and require a large space, a suitable date and time, and the creation of a group with similar interests to assure a comfortable environment that facilitates their interaction (e.\u2009g. shop keepers or members of an association). The online version works better for individual interactions, but the participants need to have digital literacy skills and equipment, and you need to explain the tools in a training session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hold the workshop<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask participants to draw their resident\u2009\/\u2009user experiences (e.\u2009g. crossing the street or resting), including the barriers encountered, on a geographical map of a familiar public space. Alternatively, provide them with blank paper (or sheets with a few elements already drawn on it) and ask them to develop mental maps. This allows participants to draw their own perception of space that leads to a more personal representation of space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative mapping allows participants to identify and visualise the most frequented areas used as passages. The facilitator and the tools provided enable the repre\u00adsen\u00adtation of local knowledge about a specific area. The act of drawing together triggers a discussion about the problems and opens up possibilities for the transforma\u00adtion of a public space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
